Dialysis Treatment

Complete guide to hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis with Dr. Rajesh Goel

What is Dialysis?

Dialysis is a treatment that performs the functions of healthy kidneys when they are no longer able to work adequately. It removes waste products and excess fluid from the blood, which the kidneys can no longer filter. Dialysis is necessary when kidney function drops to about 10-15% of normal capacity.

Hemodialysis

Blood is pumped out of the body to an artificial kidney machine and returned to the body after the waste products and extra fluid have been removed.

Key Features:

Usually done 3 times per week
Each session lasts 4 hours
Done at hospital or dialysis center
Requires vascular access (AV fistula/graft)

Advantages

  • + Done by trained professionals
  • + Regular monitoring

Considerations

  • - Time-consuming
  • - Dietary restrictions
  • - May cause fatigue after sessions

Peritoneal Dialysis

A special fluid is introduced into the abdomen through a catheter. The peritoneum acts as a natural filter to remove waste products.

Key Features:

Can be done at home
Continuous or intermittent
Requires catheter placement
Manual or automated (APD)

Advantages

  • + More independence
  • + No needle sticks
  • + Can travel more easily

Considerations

  • - Risk of infection (peritonitis)
  • - Daily procedure
  • - Carrying fluid bags

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I live on dialysis?

With proper care, many patients live 10-20 years or more on dialysis. Survival depends on age, overall health, and adherence to treatment.

Can I work while on dialysis?

Yes, many patients continue working. Hemodialysis patients can schedule treatments to accommodate work schedules. Peritoneal dialysis offers even more flexibility.

Is dialysis painful?

Most patients do not feel pain during dialysis. Some may experience low blood pressure, muscle cramps, or nausea during or after treatment.

What foods should I avoid?

Patients should limit potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and fluid intake. A renal dietitian can help plan meals.

What is an AV fistula?

An arteriovenous fistula is a surgical connection between an artery and vein, usually in the arm, creating a stronger blood vessel for easier needle access during hemodialysis.
