Swap/Exchange Kidney Transplant
When your donor is incompatible, paired kidney exchange can save your life
What is Swap Transplant?
Swap (or exchange) kidney transplantation is a program where two incompatible donor-recipient pairs "swap" donors, so that each patient receives a compatible kidney. For example, if your blood type or crossmatch is incompatible with your willing donor, but another pair has the opposite situation, both pairs can benefit from the exchange.
Dr. Rajesh Goel has extensive experience in performing swap transplants with excellent outcomes. His team coordinates with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) for government-approved swap programs.
How It Works
Incompatible Pair Identified
Patient A has a willing donor, but blood type or crossmatch is incompatible.
Paired Matching
Patient B also has an incompatible donor. The two pairs are matched for compatibility.
Donor A → Recipient B
Donor A donates to Recipient B (who they are compatible with).
Donor B → Recipient A
Donor B donates to Recipient A (completing the swap).
